Problem

  • An independent music label faced the challenge of a band that couldn't afford to pre-pay for merchandise before a tour. They sought a solution to enable fans to purchase tour-exclusive merchandise through an app that verified concert tickets. The app would also address the issue of fans missing part of the show due to long merchandise lines.

Solution

  • The Tour Merchandise App was conceived as a solution to these problems. It aimed to provide a convenient and accessible way for fans to purchase merchandise without waiting in lines and to prevent fraud through ticket verification.

Project Objectives

  • Product Variety: Offer a diverse selection of tour-exclusive merchandise to cater to different fan preferences.

  • Line Reduction: Enable fans to purchase merchandise directly through the app, eliminating the need to wait in lines.

  • Fraud Prevention: Implement a robust system to verify concert tickets and prevent unauthorized purchases.

Research Methodology:

  • Live User Interviews: Conducted in-person interviews with concert-goers waiting in lines at music venues during Spring 2019.

  • Key Questions:

    • Are you planning on any merchandise at the concert? Why or why not?

    • If unable to buy tour merch at the venue, do you wish there was a way to buy tour exclusive merch after the concert?

    • Do you wish there was an easier way to buy merchandise? What examples can you give?

    • A significant number of fans expressed a strong desire to purchase merchandise directly related to the tour they were attending.

    • Many respondents mentioned that exclusive merchandise, such as limited-edition items or items not available elsewhere, would be particularly appealing.

  • Value of Convenience:

    • Users appreciated the convenience of purchasing merchandise directly at the venue, avoiding the need to wait in line or search for merchandise after the concert.

    • Many respondents mentioned that the ability to purchase merchandise without leaving the venue would save them time and effort.

  • App as a Sales Channel:

    • Users suggested that an app could be a convenient and effective platform for selling merchandise.

    • Potential benefits of an app included:

      • Easy access to merchandise anytime, anywhere

      • Ability to browse and purchase merchandise before, during, or after the concert

      • Exclusive offers or limited-edition items available only through the app.
